How to get enough potassium

by Patricia
(Midwest)

Patricia's question...

I have problems with my potassium level being low. Can you tell me which foods I should eat to get enough potassium?

Suzy's answer...

Thank you for your great question, Patricia! As you probably know, potassium is a mineral that is vital to the way your body functions. It helps to release energy from carbs, helps maintain proper fluid balance and is necessary for normal muscle and nerve function.

If you don’t get enough potassium you may feel tired, weak, have muscle cramps or have an irregular heartbeat. The neat thing about potassium is that it is found in all whole foods, particularly fruits and vegetables. By including plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet, you will help insure that you are getting enough potassium.

Although fruits and vegetables are probably the best sources, you can also get potassium by eating nuts, seeds, meats, milk and beans. In addition, you may want to limit your intake of table salt and carbonated beverages, both of which can upset the potassium balance in your body.

One interesting little side note about potassium is that eating large amounts of black licorice can result in loss of potassium. Now, I’m not suggesting that you never have it, just don’t overdo, especially if you are prone to potassium deficiency.

I hope this helps, Patricia, and thanks for visiting our healthy eating website.

Eat and be healthy with my warmest regards,
